The problem with tasteful trends is that everyone co-opts classy, nice things so much that it becomes hard to discern between wearers with good taste and clueless followers. Plaid and flannel and gingham and tartan and blah blah blah blah is so popular these days. I can't complain because it's now readily available wherever I go that I don't have to search for it. Well, that's not true; I now have to search for really special, unique patterns and colors that would go over the head of the average entry-level alt idiot.
I found this vintage Aquascutum plaid scarf on ebay. I can't afford it, but man, is it beautiful. I love the colors and the tasteful lines/stripes that trim the plaid.
It has now occurred to me that some people may find it confusing that a small asian girl dresses like an old white man.
Spring/Summer '09 preview at Oliver Peoples. Yeah yeah, the Zooey thing is played out, but I am dying over these sunglasses, seriously. They are totally and completely perfect. Did I mention that I'm doing my image over? Er, redoing my image? Look? I'm going for a gay Audrey Hepburn + English Schoolboy + Vintage Ivy League. Kill me.
Ugh, more things to want. I fell in loves with these shoes at Opening Ceremony, but I think I'd want them in black, seeing as I have enough boots in brown leather. The chocolate color is so nice, though.
These are cute ... would go nice with a pale dress.
one time when i was about 5 or 6, circa '91 or '92, my aunt (the fun aunt) took me out shopping and bought me an outfit that would change my life.
we went to JC Penney and picked out a light blue cropped denim blouse, with pearl buttons and a tie-front waist and a big ruffle for a collar (vaguely like this one, though not in that repulsive fabric, obviously, and not a wrap-around:),
white straight-leg jeans, and black leather biker ankle-booties, of this ilk:
thus, good people, commenced my now-illustrious career in Dressing Impeccably And Being Better Than You.
i'm thinking exclusively my gold locket, with respect to jewelry.
i'm thinking all black.
i'm thinking French.
i'm thinking Marcel Marceau.
i'm thinking furs.
i'm thinking the cracked-out yet elegant lovechild of Liza Minelli and Joel Grey (wtf) in Cabaret.
O_O
my functionality level is being forced to skyrocket for the next few months, so this is the only thing i can come up with that will work for this while still being interesting.
A 17-year-old boy I met at some random party sent me a message over myspace telling me to check out Christopher Kane's line during fashion week. I came across an outdated show; the Spring 2008 Ready to Wear line. I was much more impressed with it than the newer seasons. Anyway, to sum it up: delicate, flouncy material; thin oxfords; and crazy black and blue witchboots that ended up tying together every outfit with a satisfying punch of color.
The models remind me of The Others and Picnic At Hanging Rock.
My friend, Tom, who has impeccable classic taste and an affinity for handiness, recommended me these beautiful camping backpacks made of canvas and leather. They're made by a small company called Frost River. Unfortunately, the one I want is sold out, but at $139, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway.
Etsy seller Totusmel makes a lot of pretty, lacey accessories. Though I have some complaints with her detailing (often, her pieces have one embellished flaw that offsets them, such as a metal gear, copper balls, or skull bead), I like the overall idea.
I'll probably buy one of her more simple bracelets or necklace/pendants in the near future to complement my various v-neck tees (I know) and/or dresses.
Check out her masks: they'd make great halloween costume accessories.
Here's one that Aubrey liked (I do, too).
If I bought this, I'd replace the inappropriate ball chain with black thread.
Here's that metal gear I was talking about. Steampunk, eek.
I was going to bid on this cute vintage preppy dress on ebay going for only $9.99, but then realized that it was a summer-specific dress, and would probably have to wait 9 months to wear it. That or move to Guam.
I'm looking for an ivory/beige/off-white lacey dress (like a slip, but not as thin). One that's wispy and delicate, but not a creepy Victorian era one that reminds me of dead people in The Others. I'll probably find it on Urban, and then hate myself for wanting and eventually buying it.
A classmate told me she loved my look, and that it was very "sexy grunge, not ugly grunge ... well-fitted, redefined grunge," which made me super happy because that's EXACTLY the look I'm going for these days. That or "too busy to give a shit and thus sloppy and fucked up."
Okay, let me start this entry off negatively: I'm not as fond of Sophomore'sFall 08 line as I was their Spring/Summer 08 one. The latter seemed fresh in its debut, and I really enjoyed its new takes on simplicity with an emphasis on color and shape. I'm heartbroken I didn't get one of their dresses before they sold out.
That being said, I like the men's line this season a lot, mainly because I'm actually pretty boring and enjoy plain clothes (as I'm sure you've figured out by now). Sophomore again got Cass Bird to shoot for their look book and had Terry Richardson's hot half-asian girlfriend and the singer from The Virgins model for their clothes. Good decision, guys.
Button Pullover (I like this super dark indigo color)
Button Dress
Button Sweatshirt -- I'm sure only giant people can pull off the weird proportions of this sweatshirt.
